Or you who miss the Black Death..Hunta Virus (genetically similar to Bubonic Plague).” This cigarette girl of disease offers large selection of maladies that are not seen much anymore. Well at least they are not seen in the post industrial countries.
This, as you may have guessed by now, is a side benefit of the large influx of South American children dumped here by parents, desperate to escape the crushing poverty and violence of their homes in south America. Tuberculosis has been making a comeback in recent years. Strains that are increasingly resistant to treatment have been popping up.
Some sarcasm has been floated as to the previous difficulty the native population had when exposed to European viruses brought over by the Spanish in the 1500s. I guess if we all can’t visit the third world with wide spread small pox we should bring a little of the third world home.

This post is pure self-centered boasting as well as a precautionary tale about progress and judgment. As a proud owner of a 1911 I was never swayed by the unsubstantiated rumors that led shooters into the 9 mm craze and subsequent shame at having been so duped.
In all things a good judgment of quality and attention to track record is invaluable in judging outcomes. Against the onslaught of snide comments about having twice the magazine capacity than my 1911. Find a story of an average gunfight and I bet you can’t find one article on how a 1911 ‘ran dry’. Most gunfights are over in seconds, they happen with only inches between the shooters, and body mass is as accurate as you are going to get.
SIZE MATTERS? The FBI agents involved in the 1986 shootout of two robbery suspects in Dade county Florida would confirm that size, (in this case, caliber) matters. The suspects took multiple hits of 9mm pistol ammunition and still kept coming.. Even outnumbering the suspects four to one did not prevent two FBI fatalities and five others wounded. The FBI started looking for a more powerful round than the 9mm.
Eleven years after, two bank robbery suspects, armored from neck to foot, engaged in a running shootout with police in which they out gunned the officers responding. The city refit the officers with .45 caliber handguns for good measure.

The moral to this story is that what is called progress doesn’t always turn out to be better. I am a collector of war stories. Over the past couple of decades I have probed and prodded old veterans till they spilled something of their experiences. It was rather difficult to get some of the old men to open up. Some had never talked about their war experiences, all had been raised not to brag.
Omaha beach, the Battle of the Bulge, Iwo jima…the list of battles waged by these old warriors is endless, and their exploits are always rendered in quiet terms, without fanfare and bluster.
A good sport, we have been taught, dos not brag or beat his chest. I feel such quiet heroism increases the status of the soldier. He is seen as a true man, whose word is subdued but as binding as steel. Such strong and silent men are fading from the American picture. They have been replaced by the braying jack-ass who is jumping around acting the fool and thumping his own chest. The real man quietly retired to his life after saving the world. The barking man-boy is the standard of the day.
Bless the quiet heroes. On this July fourth find an old vet and thank him. They are leaving us at about ten thousand a day and soon it will be too late to express our gratitude. If Eric Holder ( “Holder down while I finish Barack!”) is allowed reset the gauges on the truth-o-meter, he is establishing precedent. Would the present administration enjoy flying airlines with air traffic controllers who couldn’t speak English? And if it is established that you cannot be compelled to know information that will enable you to do the job, then it is discrimination if you expect the surgeon to know the difference between a heart and an appendix.
Wait, wait, this is getting too murky. I cannot make out what the issue is. Hmmmmmm, (thoughtful look up and to the left). Oh yes, it is hard to get a handle on this issue because……THERE IS NO ISSUE!
I guess the immutable truth is…Never let a progressive (gutless wonder) see how the sausages are made. If he doesn’t like what he sees he will make it a crime to make sausage.
