The fighters, having fought as insurrectionists in northern Turkey, appear to be the “real thing”. The odds of catching a bullet or RPG round are about equal for males and females. The possible consequences of capture are quite another matter.

If you want to give a movie greater emotional impact, and more gravitas to an American audience, throw in some Christian symbolism and references to biblical assertions. Anyone raised in a Christian culture will respond with a sense of spiritual fascination. Wether you are a Asuza Street Mission Christian or militant atheist, these symbols ignite the imagination in ways and at emotional depths that are primal and essential. Such is the potency of the cultural crib. Paranoid schizophrenics more often than not, weave biblical imagery and beliefs into their confused vision of the world. Religion runs deep, deeper than the average secular apostate will ever admit.
With this in mind, can any devout Muslim be truly moderate? A large percentage of my family are Muslim. I have known, broken bread, and even lived with them during the last 35 years or so. I know them. One is my sandy-haired blue-eyed sister. Of late, their wing of the family has broken ties with us. They have cloistered themselves from the influence of the west. Some of this in reaction to the secularization of the younger generation. And I believe, for the most part as a evolutionary mind-set and reaction to the perennial increase in terrorism. The moderate Muslim is rare, and will appear quite singular. This is because he will not behave or believe as do other Muslims. He is not considered a good Muslim by other Muslims.
A devout Muslim may not openly support Jihadi behavior, but to a man they will say that they can “understand” why they do what they do. Religion runs deep. You can never say with certainty that a person will never have a religious revival in the shadows of their closet. At least, don’t bet civilization on it.
ISIS (Islamic state of Iraq and the Levant) recently posted a gruesome video of the beheading of journalist James Foley as an open challenge to America. Along with the video went the message that the United states was In the crosshairs as well. The threat is a common one, used by such as Al-Qaeda and their ilk. But this threat has different dimensions than previous threats. They have huge money ,and they have a virtual army of bloodthirsty troops ready to do the bidding of the leadership. They have acquired real-estate that is greater in area than Syria or Iraq. Large regions of both strife – ridden states have been carved then combined to form ISIS’s caliphate.
Their violence is beyond description, their intentions are nihilistic to the extreme and with a modern-day Caliphate they can easily acquire a suitcase nuke or two. We could see Obama’s home town, Chicago, Illinois sprout a mushroom cloud.
In the days of the cold war, we had nuclear holocaust drills. At the bell grade-schoolers would line the school hallways, cover and crouch. To kiss our little asses goodbye? Probably.
But all sensed that the opponents had a rational desire to thrive and an ability to appreciate the consequences of rash action. We owned despots, they owned despots and most regional questions were decided by proxy. At no time did one feel an irrational nut had single handed sway over the fate of the world. There are no governing factors in the ISIS playbook Apocalyptic, nihilistic, eager to usher in the twelfth Imam and begin Armageddon. ISIS is too extreme for Al Qaida and is denied affiliation for tactics beyond the pale by miles. ISIS is a plane ticket away. Our borders are open and an army of thousands could be brand new Texans in very short order. The most wise mindset is that they are already here and more are in transit.

ISIS, not to be topped in the “we’re the most fundamental of all!” position, has pledged to “ruin” the Kaaba. The Kaaba, a large boulder that sits in Mecca, is a point of pilgrimage for Muslims. Reputedly, it is the rock at which Big Mo prayed. It is the most holy of holy’s for the average Muslim. BUT! Yes there is a but. The very existence of the Kaaba as a relic begs the debate over Idolatry in Islam. So, after ruining Iraq, ISIS plans on buying some jackhammers and ending the debate.
One of the hardest lessons I ;have learned about life and my relationship with other males, came as a result of a fist fight that I lost. I was bleeding as I staggered down a hot dirt road that lie at the edge of my tiny hometown of Alva, Oklahoma. My brother happened along in his old ford pick-up. (It had a smoke stack that really wasn’t attached to the manifold) I jumped in the truck and reported franticly that so- and- so beat me up. I expected David my tough older brother to go avenge me. He refused to be seen with me for several days.
Davids reaction was wholly unexpected. I was crushed. But the lesson I learned is that no-one can fight my fights for me. I will either win-lose or draw and I am the one who will live with the consequences. I was given a choice, Man up or take it and like it. The fact that I can fail motivates me to excel because I don’t like failing. So toughen your skin young man and take it on the jaw. There is something worse than death. Dishonor.
One wonders what is going through the minds of the men that are pictured above? Did they conjecture about the men, evenly spaced with AK’s ready? Did they question why they were being herded to a remote area that had a large clearing? Did it dawn on them that they were about to be executed?
I remember the first time I saw the grainy black and white films of Jews obediently running to the edge of deep ditch full of their fellow victims dead bodies. I am always disturbed by how co-operative victims are, even to the point of the trigger pull. The typical reaction to watching such films of the holocaust is. “No way! I’d fight to the very last moment!” I am sure that some of these very people, herded to the ditch and stripped to the skin, entertained such thoughts of resistance. Why then, does no one fight back?
Like a deer transfixed to the headlights of the approaching car they stare in disbelief as they meet their fate. They must be “waiting for a miracle” to save them.

We once lived at the edge of Alva Oklahoma. A wheat field literally ended at my front yard. And the town, not varying more than a few hundred in population since WWII boasted 5500 souls. We were rural.
I got to see my older brother chased by a turkey. I saw my father snap the neck of a chicken and in attempting to cut it’s head off with a bread knife I saw him cut his index finger to the bone. Doing objectionable things is part of life in the country, from gutting fish and fowl to wrapping a come-along cable around a calves feet to pull it from it’s mothers womb, life required we suck it up and get a steady gut.
As the American culture continues to be feminized, we become less and less able to look at the unpleasant realities of life. And like the brat child scaring his sister with a dead frog in his hands, these murdering bastards know we are soft. and easily repulsed. The terrorist gains power from his ability to go where no one else dare go. And the worst terrorist reads your character and designs his terror accordingly. As a culture we have become separated from the basic visceral realities of life. Our gag reflex has a hair trigger and we are truly vulnerable.
